Writing!

So that’s two mornings this week that I have implemented my plan to work on my writing while G is at preschool.

I have taken myself out to the deck with my notebook and a travel mug full of coffee and I have plunged myself into a story.

It’s hard. My head literally buzzes when I come back inside. But I love it.

I also love the fact that I know my neighbour will be watching me from her kitchen thinking, what on earth is she up to? I wonder if she’ll ask. It’s quite a good incentive to keep going, that maybe one day I’ll be able to turn to her and say, oh yeah, you know all those mornings you saw me out there scribbling? Well, here’s the book.

Vanity is a valid motivational tool, right?

I tell you what though, I’m going to have to get faster or carve out more writing time, because my word count is quite low at the moment (600 the other morning, closer to 700 this morning). Still, they are words-on-paper and not just thinking-about-writing or wishing-I-was-writing or, worst of all, talking-about-writing-but-not-doing-it. And I was quite happy with some of the stuff I churned out today.

Added bonus: it is so much easier to clean the kitchen when I’m darting back in to refill the coffee cup and in a hurry to get back out and keep on writing, than it is to when all I have to look forward to today is, um, a clean kitchen. Maybe.

  1. Are you going to do it? Have you done it before?

I accidentally picked up the handbook in a bookstore a couple of years ago and have been sorely tempted… Maybe this is the year. But 1667 words a day without fail doesn’t seem quite such a breeze now.

  2. Congratulations on showing up to your writing twice this week. My kids are older now (jr. high and high school) and I still struggle with settling down to the page once everyone is out the door. You are creating a great habit!

  3. Suggestion to you… How about going to a cafe/coffee shop to write, I know for me, I have to because I’m too distracted with the phone, and any cleaning that’s been waiting for days – well – it can wait another day..

    Happy Writing

Ps. Nanowrit.com is a great place for you to be and become productive in your work – november challenge check it out…
