H is for Hookey

Oops, I fell off the blogging grid completely this weekend. I didn’t even write in my paper journal, so I can’t claim that. Ah well, it was the weekend, we had visitors, I was exhausted, it’s all good.

Yesterday afternoon K gave me a free pass to get out on my own for a little while, with the only associated cost being to swing by an Indian restaurant and pick up dinner. I was gone, baby. Luckily for me the Indian restaurant didn’t open until an hour after I set off (an hour in theory. In reality they kept rejecting me until an hour and a half after my arrival, and half an hour after their posted opening time). So I trochled off to Barnes & Noble and bought myself a notepad and wrote down writing topic ideas. Then I picked out three new books (one of short stories, one a historical mystery and one a contemporary mystery) and scooted back to pick up the food that I had, eventually, convinced the restaurant to cook for us.

I started the contemporary mystery this morning and, oh dear, it’s one of those ones that I’m probably going to keep sneaking off to read until it’s finished. And it’s the first in a series. While I do appreciate ‘literature’ and even enjoy some of it, I have to confess to a liking for a page-turner, particularly if it has a mystery in it. They are the kinds of books that inspire me to write more, rather than intimidating me.

However, my book of short stories was the annual “America’s Best” or whatever it’s called, and I’m sure there will be plenty of ‘worthy’ writing in there. My interest was piqued by the fact that Stephen King was the editor and I’ve come to respect him in recent years. There should be a few things I like in there, surely.

Now to make some time to read…
